BATEREC presents a project of separate collection of used batteries and accumulators, and informing the population on the need for their collection, organized by the City Hall of Chisinau, with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic in the framework of the Polish program of cooperation for the development of Polish – Pomok

Objectives of Baterec

Creating a municipal system of separate collection and recycling of used batteries and accumulators, in order to promote of the protection and improvement of environmental quality and public health, as well as to implement the tasks envisaged by of the management strategies of rational use of waste in the Republic of Moldova in 2013 - 2017 years.

Why there is necessary to collect separately the used batteries?

Necessity of recycling of batteries is increasing so as more and more batteries appears on among the waste on landfill sites, and it is not important, they are new or used, the batteries contain metallic elements of high molecular weight, which become dangerous waste during combustion, they are corrosive, they are susceptible to reactivation, are toxic. Therefore, they need proper handling and storage conditions, as they become hazardous to health and harmful effects on the environment.

Metals that are part of the battery are known as carcinogens.

Statistics show that each year there are thrown away about 800,000 tons car batteries and 160,000 tons of conventional portable batteries.

Batteries 3R:

Reduce

  • Use the accumulators instead of disposable batteries, that can replace hundreds of such batteries.
  • Use batteries containing less mercury and other heavy metals.
  • urchase appliances or devices that work without batteries.

Reuse

  • For any reuse batteries must be rechargeable. Their use leads to a reduction in the cost of one use due to the possibility of repeated charging, Although the cost of purchasing of rechargeable batteries higher than conventional batteries.

Recycling

  • Recycling of batteries eliminates ingress of heavy metals the air and their presence in a landfill.
  • Due to the recycling the resources are saved, in particular metal, and recycled plastics may be used in the manufacture of other batteries. For example, each battery has an average of about 20 g of metal, which can be reused.

  • From 1000 portable battery can be obtained 190 kg of iron that is used in the industry.
  • Coin batteries that are used in watches and calculators, are the most dangerous, because they include 30% of mercury. One such battery can contaminate 600,000 liters of water, and in contact with water, mercury constitutes a carcinogen that can have a serious impact on the nervous system and kidneys.
  • One waste battery thrown into the wastebasket and then turned out into landfills can contaminate one square meter of land, and 10 liters of water.
  • Heavy metals contained in batteries may leak into the soil and groundwater, impacting on vegetation and human health. This can cause allergies, infertility, memory loss, cancer, heart diseases, etc.
  • Every one of us at home use averages eight batteries.
  • Dispose of used batteries saves resources by allowing to recover valuable metals, such as nickel, cobalt and silver.
  • The use of recycled metals contained in batteries reduces the level of their consumption.
  • On average, a one Romanian buys 2 batteries (such as tablets) and 10 normal batteries and throws in the trash about 8 batteries per year.
